At WorldSkills we believe that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has a powerful impact on the lives of young people and their communities, our industries and economies, and our planet.
Our Members and Industry Partners share this belief and work tirelessly by innovating to attract more young people to skills, improving systems and standards, and supporting growth and human development. Our institutional partners are also advancing skills development at the global level and striving for further international cooperation and common goals.
Despite all evidence, TVET continues to lack visibility in global agendas such as the Transforming Education Summit (2022) and the Summit of the Future, scheduled to take place in September 2024.
The theme for WorldSkills Conference 2024, Moving TVET to the top of the global agenda, responds to our desire to elevate the recognition of technical training and its significance in the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as in a post-2030 agenda.
Taking place alongside WorldSkills Lyon 2024, the Conference will be held from 11 to 12 September, encompassing two days of high-level discussions on policy and best practices on the most relevant, interconnected areas affecting skills development.
Excellence in TVET
WorldSkills Occupational Standards and our Competitions are rooted in excellence at the workplace. Our understanding of excellence is based on elevating every young person to the best of their capacities and ensuring that they have the right skills to thrive in the world of work. Therefore, we believe that equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential components to pursuing excellence.
With this in mind, WorldSkills Conference 2024 will have excellence at its core and present across all sessions. Specific talks will address the common denominators that make up successful TVET systems, the tools and resources available worldwide to ensure quality and dignified apprenticeships, how to obtain relevant data that helps policymakers and practitioners improve provisions, or how WorldSkills Competition can help advance skills developments in low- and middle-income countries.
Social justice
How can policymakers rethink and design TVET and sectoral policies to break the entrenched gender gaps in the world of work? How can TVET systems and institutions reinforce foundational skills – when existing – to ensure better outcomes for these learners?
Bridging learning gaps, breaking gender barriers, or integrating people who have been displaced due to conflict, or climate change will be some of the topics looking at the role of skills development in advancing social justice.
Digitalization and greening TVET
The international community continues to highlight the major mismatches among graduates of vocational and higher education programmes and the skills needed in the world of work. Automation, artificial intelligence, and the push for the green economy are having a significant impact on jobs.
WorldSkills Conference 2024 will address the relevance of TVET systems and their ability to respond to the learning needs of individuals, societies, and economies. With our large network of industry partners, leaders in their sectors, we will reflect on the possibilities offered by new technologies and digitalization, or the needs of systems to supply the skills needed for the green transition.
WorldSkills Conference 2024: Moving TVET to the top of the global agenda will bring the right voices to speak up for skills, advance the skills agenda, and open a sphere of influence.
