Shweta Ratanpura was the first woman to win a medal for her country, India, at a WorldSkills Competition, securing a bronze medal in Graphic Design Technology at WorldSkills Kazan 2019. A graduate of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, she has worked as a graphic designer with companies like Samsung and Google. Shweta says that WorldSkills turned her into a confident professional and that “all moments leading up to the event” changed her as a person. In India, where success is often limited to a handful of careers, Shweta’s design career choice was questioned. She is grateful for her parents’ support despite societal pressure. As a WorldSkills Champions Trust representative, Shweta aims to strengthen alumni platforms for knowledge exchange. She wants to advocate for young people, especially girls, to consider skill-based careers as paths to personal fulfilment and professional success.
