Professor Mohammed Belhocine is an international consultant in public health and development, currently serving as the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation within the African Union. An Algerian national, Professor Belhocine has extensive experience in global health leadership, having held key roles at the WHO Regional Office for Africa, including Director of the Division of Non-Communicable Diseases and a WHO Representative in Nigeria and Tanzania. Earlier in his career, he was Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and held positions in Algeria’s health sector before joining the international civil service in 1997. He also served as UN System Coordinator in Tunisia. At 71, Professor Belhocine continues to contribute to public health, notably serving as a member of Algeria’s Covid-19 Scientific Committee. He is a father of three and grandfather of six.
