Ms Seppo joined the International Labour Organization on 1 February 2023 as Assistant Director-General for the Jobs and Social Protection Cluster. Ms Seppo has served with the United Nations for more than 20 years where she has held positions of increasing responsibility, both in the field and at headquarters. She began her career at the UN in 1996, focusing on governance and human rights issues. Since then, she has worked in Tajikistan and Sierra Leone, including two terms as UN Resident Coordinator in Malawi and in Bangladesh. Her last assignment was as the UNDP Resident Representative in Zimbabwe where she served in 2022. During her extensive career with the UN, Ms Seppo has worked in post-conflict and peacekeeping contexts, managed UN support to complex elections and coordinated responses to humanitarian crises. Ms Seppo has extensive experience of development effectiveness issues and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. A Finnish national, Mia holds a Master’s degree in social sciences from the University of Helsinki, Finland.
